In fact, leadership is crucial in cultivating this culture and guiding individuals and teams toward their goals. Self: Empowering Personal Growth Through Leadership

Leadership begins with self-awareness and reflection. A self-aware leader understands their strengths and weaknesses, allowing them to set an example for their team. Therefore, leaders can create an environment where accountability thrives by being aware of their egos. Subsequently, they model openness to feedback and demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow.

Leadership also involves encouraging hard conversations within oneself. A good leader welcomes feedback, no matter how challenging it may be. They understand that personal growth comes from acknowledging areas for improvement. Equally important, by embracing feedback received, leaders set the tone for accountability within the team.

Influential leaders communicate these goals clearly and ensure that every team member understands how their work contributes to the objectives. In fact, this clarity helps to align efforts and focus energies in the right direction.

Tip: Before wrapping up a meeting, have all team members share their critical roles in moving the decisions forward with the group. This will ensure everyone is on the same page.

Respecting timelines and deadlines is a hallmark of strong leadership. Leaders set an example by honouring deadlines and holding themselves accountable. They instill a sense of urgency within the team, emphasizing the importance of timely delivery.

Set an example: Hold yourself accountable to the same standards you set for the team. This will garner buy-in and respect.

Leadership involves tracking commitments and holding team members accountable for their promises. By doing so, leaders ensure everyone stays on track by monitoring progress and following up on commitments. This accountability fosters a culture of trust and reliability within the team.

Make it obvious: Use whiteboards or technology to make the team’s objectives, goals, and progress to date accessible to everyone.

Organizational Success: Promoting a Culture of Feedback

All too often, we focus on the negative and not the positive, which can be an easy shift for all leaders. For example, we can make it a daily habit to recognize the contributions of others by practicing these three easy steps:

1. Observe the facts.
2. Share the positive impact to you, for them and the team, clients, and the organization.
3. Express gratitude for a job well done.

This positive reinforcement undoubtedly motivates individuals to continue performing at their best.

Unfortunately, sometimes we need to lean into a difficult conversation to course-correct. As leaders, we can approach this as a learning opportunity and approach this feedback in a supportive manner. As such, the following structured steps will help you navigate and set you up for success in any difficult conversation:

1. Share the purpose of the meeting.
2. Describe what you observed.
3. Provide clarity by describing the impact on you, for them, the team, clients, and the organization.
4. Ask for challenges and obstacles team members face, listen with empathy, and offer support.
5. Ask for their solutions to garner buy-in and ownership. If they are feeling stuck, offer to brainstorm together.
6. Ask for their commitments and deadlines to ensure accountability.

Unquestionably, by involving team members in finding solutions, leaders empower them to take ownership of their development. Critically, your role is to show up with empathy and compassion and be prepared.

Tip: To prepare, practice your approach with a trusted colleague to ensure your tone and message are clear and supportive.

As has been noted, building a culture of accountability requires leadership at every level—from self-leadership to team leadership and organizational leadership. Accordingly, by embodying accountability in their actions and behaviours, leaders set the tone for the entire organization.
